An international conference in Northern Ireland, reflecting on current threats to transitional justice processes, the implications for memorialisation and the associated risks of denialism, impunity and damaging reconciliation.
The Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) in partnership with the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) is hosting a major international conference with Queen’s University Belfast in November.
At a critical juncture for transitional justice in Northern Ireland and globally, the Belfast Conference brings together academics, international experts, human rights defenders, and victims’ advocacy groups. Featuring comparative case studies from Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Spain, South Africa, the Basque Country, and beyond, the conference bridges global insights with local expertise.
A keynote address will be given by Prof. Bernard Duhaime, UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence. Specific sessions will cover ‘transitional justice gains under threat’; Controlling the Narrative of the Past ‘Oral History, memorialisation and reconciliation’; and national security restrictions and accountability for human rights violations.
